Thank you so much for your sober presentation. No words are necessary.
Kevin, my younger son (the trumpet player) now 52, played it at my grandson's School this last Thursday. I told the 7-year-old boy that the first time his father played the Last Post, it was in Ottawa, at the Governor General's Ceremony. My son was only 16 then. I attended with my (much older, and now gone) brother, a WW2 veteran, who had raised from the rank of Major to become the Colonel of his French Canadian Regiment. The Ceremony had been a deeply felt experience. And it remained with me all those years. War is hell, my brother always said. Even more so for the soldiers of both sides, who are called upon to participate actively, and sacrifice their lives. To remember and thank them is the least we can do.
It was lovely today, St Johns church rang their bells for the laying of the wreaths. My Great grandad died in WW1 and my Grandad WW2. It was a proud moment to take part.
Please, allow me to correct my English. It's still so imperfect after all those years. I think it should have been: my brother had risen from the rank of major? Still not sure!!! Anyhow, he went from being a Major at the end of WW2 to Colonel, during the Cold War years. Sadly, he died before the Berlin Wall came down.
War does seem to be such a futile and wasteful way of resolving a dispute. Loss of life, loss of beautiful buildings and countryside. If only there was another way.
A retired Mechanical Engineer living on the edge of the beautiful Chilterns, with an interest in things Musical. An Organ Grinder, without a real Monkey;.. but I do have a large collection of old sheet music which I enjoy playing and if possible arranging some of it for my little home-built, 26 note organ.

Save English Marriage
The state should get out of marriage completely. Offer Civil Partnerships to everybody who wants their relationship to be recognised for tax and other civil purposes, but leave it to others to "marry" people.
"Britain's top animal disease scientists have launched a devastating attack on the government's "mindless" badger cull, accusing ministers of failing to tell the truth and demanding the immediate abandonment of the killings. Even the government's own chief scientist has refused to back the killings."

Badger Cull Postponed
Hot off the Press
Back in the Seventies, just before we joined the Common Market, as the EU was called back then, The Who wrote that great song, "Won't get fooled again".
But in the last 40 years, we've been fooled time and time again. We were told our membership of Europe was about trade and opening up markets to British goods.
Instead we got political interference, endless rules and regulations, our fish stocks plundered and foreign criminals claiming the 'right to a family life' in Britain.
‘History shows that any power having an inflated ego usually ends badly’
Guess who?
John Smith
Just thinking aloud.
Norway and Switzerland - outside the EU - are the wealthiest countries in Europe. We aren't ... because we are paying £48 million a day into the EU, plus wasting money complying with their regulations; propping up the Euro and everything else. That will be going up to £60 millon a day in a year or so. Money well spent? Hah. We might just as well burn it.
I love the last post, it always brings a lump to the throat.

The Last Post always brings a lump to my throat. I attended a Remembrance Service today at our small village church. It was very poignant.

ReplyDeleteThanks again for the Last Post.
It's a very evocative tune.
