Where are the boys of the old Brigade,
Who fought for us side by side?
Shoulder to shoulder, and blade by blade,
Fought till they fell and died!
Who so ready and undismayed?
Who so merry and true?
Where are the boys of the old Brigade?
Where are the lads we knew?
Over the sea far away they lie,
Far from the land of their love;
Nations alter, the years go by,
But Heav’n is still Heav’n above,
Not in the Abbey proudly laid
Find they a place or part;
The gallant boys of the old Brigade,
They sleep in old England’s heart.

lovely thoughts for today
ReplyDeleteI shall be thinking about this lovely poem today. Thankyou for posting that Bernard.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely poem and the photo is beautiful :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you all.
ReplyDeleteThe words are actually from a song
"The Old Brigade". I have the music but only in a book of 'Parlour Songs'.
I thought I would choose a piece which many may not have heard of before.
Weatherly published over 1500 songs including 'Danny Boy' and 'Roses of Picardy'.
One of my interests is digging out old forgotten tunes....many of course, should be forgotten, but many deserve to be heard again.
Cheers......Bernard
And on a more serious note it, would appear that the traitorous Broon has achieved what both Napoleon and Hitler failed to do, namely to make Britain a province of a French- and German-dominated Europe. It seems that the remembrance we have been observing over the last few days was for the pointless sacrifice of so many lives for what now seems nothing, our liberty and freedom to decide our own laws and future.
