In a triumph for curvy cucumbers, knobbly carrots or wizened cherries, the eu has scrapped 20-year-old rules which discriminated against imperfect fresh produce.
In all, 36 types of fruit and vegetables can now be sold whatever their shape, size, lack of sheen or gnarled skin.
Ugly fruit and vegetables which have grown just as nature intended will be back on supermarket shelves from 1st July — and could be up to 40 per cent cheaper than their perfectly formed cousins.
Only 36 types notice....they will still be rejecting perfectly good food!
Utterly ridiculous. Why didn't they just repeal all the laws on shape and size of food. If it's sold by weight it's all the same anyway, and consumers will make their own minds up on whether they want to buy "ugly" produce.
But the rules will not end the jokes about bendy bananas — the standards for bananas are governed by a different set of eu rules. One eu official said that bananas were supposed to be bendy, unlike cucumbers.

The bend of a banana must be “the thickness of a transverse section of the fruit between the lateral faces and the middle, perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, must be at a minimum of 27mm(1.06ins).
